Become a Patron of The Song Garden and help to sustain it for years to come! Why become a Song Garden Patron?
A woman with chronic fatigue syndrome has visited the garden several times recently and one afternoon, we got to talking. She said that she can't garden anymore...that it is impossible for her to dig, to plant...she was depressed about this for a long while until she realized that what she CAN do is appreciate the hard work that other people put into THEIR gardens...and she can appreciate the beauty and the design, etc. This conversation got me to thinking about the similarities between putting on a concert or an artistic event for the public....and creating/designing a large scale pick your own flower garden/tea house/destination for the public. Both need an audience for the 'magic' to happen.
The garden was created in memory of, and in honor of, my Dad, Fenno F. Heath, Jr. when he passed away 4 years ago. It was also created to give my family an 'anchor' while we grieved his passing. I knew that 'horticultural therapy' was in order for us all and in creating this large scale pick your own flower farm, we found a sense of healing, of peace, of purpose...and a sense of direction....a way to move forward out of the sorrow and emptiness.
The whole 'If you build it, they will come' theory rang true for this special garden....People began to come....and tell us their stories....stories of health issues, emotional issues...life events...births, deaths, memorial services, weddings, farewells...stories of aging, of fear, of depression...People were finding their way to the garden and finding what they call 'magic', 'healing', awakening, peace, love, serenity.....and awe in the power of nature....to heal one's heart.
Dan and I toil diligently from March through November...from planting the first seeds in the greenhouses to putting the garden to bed in November.
Additionally, we run a lovely respite on the grounds...a self serve Tea House complete with tea/coffee bar, treats, lovely Victorian, genteel decor...fresh floral arrangements on the table which is set with delicate china...at the ready for visitor's tea parties...
Everything is given...the flowers, the tea, the treats, the manicured grounds, the many areas of seating which have lovely mountain views...the destination...in exchange for one's Free Will Donation. Honor System.
The number of visitors has grown steadily each of the four years, but our revenue has still never exceeded our expenses.
We are looking for financing for current and future supplies, infrastructure, etc., that we need in order to sustain our garden/tea house/grounds and our work for the community and for the visitors who come looking for joy and healing from far and wide.
Our garden needs patrons, much in the same way that a concert series needs patrons in order to be sustainable. Patron of the Arts....Patron of the Garden.
Hoping that we can raise funding to sustain The Song Garden for many years to come through this 'chipin' fund raiser.
